The Women Who Hold Us Down
Women's History Month isn’t just a time to throw around big names and famous accomplishments though we’ll get to that, it’s a chance to reflect on the women who hold us down daily. Many of us wouldn’t be where we are without the strength, love, and guidance of the women in our circles, our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends, and friends. They bring stability when life feels like a whirlwind, check in on us when we forget to check in on ourselves, and hold us accountable when we’re slacking. If this reminds you of someone, take a moment, give them a hug, shoot them a text, and just say, "Thank you."
Trailblazers Who Changed the Game
When it comes to trailblazers, the list of incredible women is long and inspiring. Globally, you’ve got figures like Marie Curie breaking scientific ground and Malala Yousafzai risking everything to fight for girls’ education. In Nigeria, we’ve had powerhouses like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who didn’t just fight for women’s rights, she shook the system to its core. And then there’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, making history as the first African woman to lead the World Trade Organization. These women didn’t just make waves, they changed the tide for everyone coming after them. And while their stories are awe-inspiring, I’m equally moved by the women in my everyday life, the mentor who’s always there with solid advice, the women I work with who bring their A-game every day, and the quiet, consistent support from the people closest to me. The world is undeniably better because of women who refuse to stay silent and who keep pushing boundaries.
But here’s the thing, celebrating women isn’t just about the famous names or grand gestures. It’s about recognizing the everyday magic women bring into our lives. For me, it’s personal. My mother’s kindness and strength have been a guiding force, and my partner’s love and support are reminders of just how powerful women’s influence can be. Whether they’re holding families together, leading in their communities, or simply being a steady presence, women’s contributions often go unnoticed, but they shape who we are in ways that words can’t fully capture. And it’s on us to appreciate that, not just this month, but every single day.
More Than Just a Month or Day: A Daily Commitment
So let’s go beyond just acknowledging past achievements, let’s actively work toward a future where every woman is respected, heard, and valued. That means supporting gender equality, amplifying women’s voices, and breaking down the barriers that still hold too many back. For me, that commitment means standing up for the women in my life and making sure their efforts never go unnoticed. When we take time to recognize the women who shape us, whether they’re making history or just making our days a little brighter, we move closer to a world that’s truly fair and inclusive. So, don’t wait, reach out, show love, and celebrate the women in your life who make life better every day.
